The Role

The Track Engineer will support the Lead Engineer (Track CRE) in the planning, design, and delivery of permanent way works across multiple rail projects. The role will involve technical support during both construction and maintenance activities, assisting in track design, inspection, and monitoring.

The successful candidate will also play a key role in track geometry monitoring, data interpretation, and the implementation of track monitoring solutions to support the safe and reliable operation of the railway.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Lead Engineer (Track CRE) in the design, assurance, and delivery of permanent way works in line with Network Rail and client standards.
  • Undertake site inspections, track surveys, and geometry checks, including use of track monitoring instrumentation and data collection systems.
  • Support in the preparation of method statements, work package plans, and other engineering documentation.
  • Contribute to track monitoring programs, ensuring accurate data capture, analysis, and reporting of track condition and performance.
  • Liaise with project teams, contractors, and clients to ensure the effective communication of technical requirements and site progress.
  • Ensure all works comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Participate in the design review process, contributing technical input to ensure constructability and compliance.
  • Support track access planning, possession management, and on-site engineering supervision where required.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, including as-built documentation and monitoring reports.
  • Assist in mentoring and developing junior engineering or technical staff as appropriate.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Site management or site supervision safety training scheme (SMSTS or SSSTS)
  • HNC/HND or degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience in track engineering (maintenance, renewal, or construction).
  • Working knowledge of CDM regulations, Network Rail standards and permanent way design principles.
  • Understanding of track geometry, monitoring systems, and data interpretation (e.g., use of systems such as Leica/Trimble).
  • Familiarity with surveying equipment and basic CAD or data processing tools.
  • Valid PTS (Personal Track Safety) competency AC/DCCR.
  • Track Handback Competency Level 1-2 and ability to work towards levels 3/4.
  • Have the ability to undertake site leadership.
  • Proficient in MS Office Software (Excel, Word and Powerpoint)
  • Full UK Drivers Licence

Desirable

  • Experience in track monitoring technologies, including installation, calibration, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of ProjectWise, Bentley Rail Track, AutoCAD or similar design software.
  • Understanding of track construction methodologies and site management practices.
