About us
KeyPoint have been in operation since around late 2016 and offer exceptional relief caretaker and cleaning service to schools across the North East. We also provide long-term placements, assigning one of our dedicated team to a school on a rolling annual contract.
We\βre currently on the lookout for a reliable and flexible individual to join our team on a zero hour contract, providing a key holding service to schools predominately across the Sunderland and Washington areas. This role is required specifically to open and close schools at agreed times but also offers the potential to include relief services to schools throughout the day if desired.
Additionally all staff have the option to progress into a one-year fixed contract with guaranteed hours, part-time or full-time, based at a single site.
Monday to Sunday (weekends optional)
Key Holding working hours based on customers needs to cover site staff absence, but usually between 6am β 7.30am for site opening and 5pm β 7.30pm for site lock up.
Attending paid call outs is also an option, but not compulsory.

Having background experience in a school caretaking role would be beneficial but is not essential as we offer full training and support to ensure our employees fully understand all aspects of the role and the requirements of working in schools, so they can quickly and easily \βhit the ground running\β.
This position is exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and in order to satisfy safer recruitment to work in schools, a satisfactory Enhanced DBS is required as part of pre-employment checks. An online search will also be completed for all shortlisted candidates.
Responsibilities
Duties will include, but not limited to;
KEY HOLDING
- Ensuring the security of premises, opening and closing schools at specific times;
- OPEN β de-active intruder alarm, switch on lights and open gates ready for staff arriving.
- CLOSE β full site security check ensuring all doors and windows are locked, lock gates, switch out lights and activate the intruder alarm.
- Key holding duties (optional) β initial response to fire and intruder alarms, taking necessary emergency measures to ensure the site is secure.
RELIEF CARETAKER
- Carrying out health and safety checks such as fire drills & legionella to ensure the school is H&S compliant.
- Maintenance duties β to carry out first line maintenance and repairs.
- Ensuring adequate supplies of products are available (e.g. light bulb/florescent tubes, cleaning materials, toilet rolls, hand towels etc.)
- Ensuring that the premise is available for out of school activities , including the setting up of equipment and / or furniture as required.
- Emptying internal/external litter bins and ensuring that the whole site is clear of litter and safe for pupils and staff to access.
- Porterage of goods and materials and movement of furniture and equipment as required.
- Cleaning of designated areas, as required such as school hall and toilets.
Requirements of the role
- Relevant experience in a caretaking environment or in a similar or related role. (DESIRABLE)
- Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation relating to a caretaking environment. (DESIRABLE)
- Ability to carry out first line repairs and maintenance where requested.
- Ability to use a range of cleaning tools and equipment.
- Ability to plan and organise work, including effective use of own time.
- Resourceful and be able to use own initiative, without constant supervision.
- Listens, consults others and communicates clearly.
- Appropriately follows instructions to achieve set objectives.
- Reliable and keeps good time.
- Attention to detail with exceptionally high standards of work.
- Committed to the provision of quality services to achieve customer satisfaction.
- UK driving license and access to own vehicle.
