We are recruiting a Senior Highways Design Engineer to take a lead role in the delivery of complex highways schemes for a local authority–focused client. This position combines technical leadership, project delivery and people management, ensuring projects are delivered safely, compliantly and in line with programme, cost and quality expectations. You will oversee design outputs, coordinate multidisciplinary teams, and act as a key point of contact for clients and stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Lead the coordination and delivery of highway design packages across multiple projects
- Undertake and oversee technical design checks and approvals
- Ensure projects are delivered to agreed time, cost and quality targets
- Manage and coordinate internal design teams and external sub-consultants
- Ensure compliance with quality management systems and internal processes
- Ensure designs comply with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation
- Provide line management, mentoring and performance management for staff
- Support training and professional development within the design team
- Work collaboratively with clients to develop project objectives and technical solutions
- Build and maintain strong client relationships
- Provide commercial awareness and input into project delivery
Qualifications
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership
- Minimum 10 years’ relevant highways design experience
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary highways projects
- Strong background in highways design and construction
- Experience reviewing outputs from design software
- Strong understanding of Local Authority design standards and contracts
- Experience working with NEC contracts and contract administration
- Knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and related guidance
- Strong Health & Safety leadership experience
- Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word
- Full UK/EEC driving licence
