The Role
We are recruiting an Assistant Design Engineer to support the development and delivery of highway maintenance, improvement and active travel schemes. This role is suited to an engineer with solid highways experience who is looking to further develop their technical capability while working on a varied portfolio of schemes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop highway maintenance schemes, from defect identification through to treatment selection and production of construction documentation
- Assist in the design of highway improvement, traffic engineering, active travel and pedestrian improvement schemes
- Support the production of forward programmes of highway maintenance works
- Assist with the management and undertaking of highway condition inspections and surveys
- Update and utilise asset management systems
- Produce technical reports and other technical outputs to achieve project outcomes
- Undertake site visits, surveys and investigations
- Ensure work is undertaken in compliance with QSE standards and processes
- Provide technical training and supervision to technicians
- Work collaboratively with customers to understand and develop project objectives
Skills & Knowledge Requirements
- Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent, or Foundation Degree / HNC / HND with sufficient post-qualification experience
- Experience in highway maintenance techniques, including identifying pavement treatments and solutions
- Asset management and construction experience within the highways sector (ideally 5+ years)
- Experience undertaking asset condition surveys
- Commercial awareness in project delivery
- Knowledge of Highways England standards, including DMRB
- Good understanding of Health & Safety and Environmental requirements in design and construction
- Computer literate with design software and Microsoft Office
- Competent user of AutoCAD and Civils 3D (desirable)
- Full UK/EEC driving licence
