We are seeking a Telecommunications Systems Engineer to provide specialist communications engineering support across the DLR network. You will play a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our telecommunications and operational technology (OT) systems, supporting both maintenance and operational teams. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working across modern and legacy systems, contributing to infrastructure reliability while developing their professional capability within a complex rail environment.
What Youâll Do
- Take responsibility for DLR telecommunications systems supporting Operational Technology assets, ranging from modern platforms to legacy systems.
- Support and maintain transmission networks using Ethernet, MPLS, SDH/SONET, and related technologies.
- Provide technical support across systems including PA, Information Displays, Radio, CCTV, Emergency Points, and Telephony.
- Investigate and diagnose faults, failures, and performance issues, providing engineering insight where safety or reliability is impacted.
- Support design reviews, supplier evaluations, and technical acceptance of new or modified assets.
- Work collaboratively with DLRL, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to define specifications and system improvements.
- Review design and assurance submissions to ensure safe integration of new assets across the project lifecycle.
- Support continuous improvement of standards, procedures, and technical documentation.
- Provide technical support to the wider Telecommunications team as required.
What Youâll Need
- Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Member of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET) or working towards Chartered Engineer (C.Eng) status.
- Basic knowledge of railway telecommunications systems, interfaces, testing, and maintenance.
- Understanding of transmission and network technologies.
- Ability to produce technical documentation such as reports, procedures, and specifications.
- Strong communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
- Good computer literacy (standard office applications).
- Flexibility to support shiftâbased operational environments.
- Practical skills in installation and wiring.
- Experience with LAN/MAN/WAN networks, Ethernet, MPLS, IP technologies, SDH/SONET.
- Exposure to Windows, Linux, servers, virtualisation, or cloud environments.
- Understanding of cyber security principles within OT or rail systems.
- Experience surveying, testing, or evaluating RF and optical transmission systems.
