Our Newcastle office is regularly recognised by the Legal 500 as offering a Band 1 level of service/technical expertise. We are seeking an experienced Catastrophic Injury Lawyer specialising in defending complex injury claims to work with our Newcastle office. The role is ideal for a driven and detail‑orientated professional who is skilled at managing high‑value, complex cases and is passionate about providing exceptional legal services in defendant motor insurance claims. The successful candidate will be part of a team working on cases involving traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, brachial plexus injuries, serious orthopaedic injuries and fatalities. Cases often involve providing detailed analysis of complex liability disputes and/or the indemnity position of various interested parties. Experience of indemnity related disputes is desirable but not essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Case Management: Working as part of a small team you will support one of our Lead Lawyers with their high value, complex injury Defendant RTA caseload. The majority of the caseload relates to claims with a value from £3million to above £20million.
- Accountability: You will be accountable for communicating & developing relationships with clients as well as the claimant’s legal team. You will also be responsible for maintaining exceptional levels of service by proactive case management.
- Research & Analysis: Conduct thorough legal research and analyse medical records, liability documents, Part 35 reports and witness statements to prepare comprehensive, detailed and technically complex advises on indemnity, liability and quantum issues.
- Court Representation: Be part of a team representing clients in hearings, joint settlement meetings, mediations, arbitrations and trials.
- Development: As well as having the drive and determination for your own career enhancement you will be fully engaged in developing more junior members of the team. You will be able to delegate appropriately and guide in terms of technical ability and achievement of objectives – team success is paramount!
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Qualified solicitor or CILEX (equivalent to 3‑4 years PQE).
- Significant experience in handling or assisting large loss or catastrophic injury files is required; the candidate will be expected to be capable of either handling a case load of large loss injury cases (£1m).
- Defendant experience is preferable but Claimant experience at a sufficient level of expertise and seniority will be considered.
- Understanding of case law and litigation practice and process, and Court Practice Rules as relevant to high value claims as well as being comfortable researching and/or analysing various legal principles to provide comprehensive advice.
- Strong technical knowledge on assessing liability, quantum issues, procedural issues (e.g. contested interim payment applications).
- Excellent organisational and IT skills.
- Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to colleagues, clients and third parties.
