We are looking for a food qualified Trading Standards Officer or Environmental Health Officer to conduct a series of food inspections for a Welsh Trading Standards Department.

About the role

To assist the Trading Standards Service in providing the full range of its functions in accordance with relevant objectives, policies and procedures.

About you

Ideally, you will bring with you knowledge and experience of the full range of Trading Standards legislation and enforcement, including Food Standards, Feed Hygiene and Product Safety. You will be organised, accurate and flexible with strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work on your own initiative. You may have an appropriate professional qualification or experience in a related field. You will be adaptable and organised, with an eye for detail and capable of working under pressure. You must be willing to carry out duties at flexible times including occasional evenings/weekends. Officers should ideally have previous experience of working in a local authority environment and have knowledge of the complete range of local authority Trading Standards legislation and experience of working in a statutory/regulatory role.

What you will do

  • Undertake routine inspections and respond to complaints and enquiries relating to Trading Standards activities and support other officers in the team with this work and their development.
  • Provide advice and assistance to businesses.
  • Work closely with other Council departments, government agencies, external partners and members of the public.
  • Apply relevant legislation and guidance and undertake investigations or enforcement as appropriate.
  • Prepare case files for prosecution, attend court/tribunals/hearings as required.
