THE OPPORTUNITY

I am recruiting for a Tier 1 Main Contractor that are looking for an experienced Design Manager to join its Civils team, based from the Leeds office. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of major civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the region and wider UK. The role would suit a Design Manager who enjoys working in a complex project environment and wants exposure to technically challenging, high-profile schemes.

Projects across the Civils division can include:

  • Major highways and road infrastructure
  • Substations and energy infrastructure
  • Major structures and bridges
  • Docks and marine infrastructure
  • Earthworks and enabling works
  • Large-scale civil engineering and infrastructure schemes

You will play a key role in leading and coordinating the design process, working closely with project teams, clients, consultants, subcontractors and supply chain partners to ensure designs are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required technical and commercial standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

As Design Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing and coordinating design activities throughout the project lifecycle
  • Leading design teams and coordinating consultants, subcontractors and the wider supply chain
  • Ensuring designs comply with project requirements, relevant standards and legislation
  • Managing design programmes, deliverables, reviews and approvals
  • Identifying and managing design risks and opportunities
  • Working collaboratively with commercial, construction, planning, procurement and engineering teams
  • Supporting the development of design solutions that are safe, buildable, efficient and commercially viable
  • Managing technical interfaces between disciplines and project stakeholders
  • Providing technical leadership and supporting the resolution of design issues
  • Ensuring appropriate design assurance and governance processes are followed
  • Engaging with clients and key stakeholders throughout the design process

ABOUT YOU

We are looking for an experienced Design Manager with a background in civil engineering, infrastructure or major construction projects. You will ideally have:

  • Proven experience working in a Design Manager role within civil engineering or infrastructure
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and external consultants
  • Strong knowledge of the design and construction process
  • Experience working on major infrastructure projects
  • Good understanding of relevant UK standards, legislation and design assurance processes
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver within challenging programmes
  • A collaborative approach and the confidence to provide technical leadership

Relevant qualifications in civil engineering, structural engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous, as would professional membership of an appropriate engineering institution.
