Freelance Mechanical Engineer Location: North East (Secure Environment Project)

Rate: £350-£450 per shift (DOE)

Contract: Freelance / Contract

Start: ASAP - December 2026

We are recruiting for a Freelance Mechanical Engineer to support delivery on a major secure government infrastructure project in the North East. Working as part of the site delivery team, you will take ownership of mechanical engineering coordination and execution across a complex live construction environment, ensuring programme, quality and compliance requirements are achieved. This role would suit someone with a strong building services / MEP background who is comfortable operating on fast-paced contractor-led projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and coordinate mechanical installation activities on site
  • Review and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical submissions
  • Oversee subcontractor performance and progress
  • Carry out inspections and ensure quality standards are maintained
  • Support commissioning, testing and handover activities
  • Coordinate with electrical, civils and project delivery teams
  • Raise and close technical queries (RFIs) and resolve site issues
  • Ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with programme requirements
  • Attend progress and coordination meetings with stakeholders

REQUIREMENTS

  • Mechanical Engineering qualification (HNC/HND/Degree or equivalent)
  • Proven experience delivering mechanical building services / MEP projects
  • Experience on large-scale construction projects
  • Strong site coordination and subcontractor management capability
  • Commissioning and handover experience beneficial
  • SMSTS / CSCS advantageous
  • Ability to work within controlled and secure project environments
