Physical Location: Kent Campus - Kent, OH
Salary: $26.84 - $28.21 (6 month rate)
Basic Function: Directs, operates, and maintains powerhouse equipment on an assigned shift. Reports to Manager, Power Plant or other designated supervisor.
Examples of Duties: Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Operates and instructs powerhouse workers in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of boilers, furnaces, and auxiliary equipment (i.e., turbines, blowers, flow meters, pumps, generators, fans, compressors, chillers and related equipment).
- Makes rounds of powerhouse; reads meters, gauges, and recording devices; visually inspects equipment to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustments, or lubrication and makes repairs and/or adjustments as required.
- Monitors power consumption meters; starts, synchronizes, switches, and stops generators, turbines, pumps, compressors, boilers, chillers and related equipment, as needed.
- Adjusts electronic controls to bring equipment into prescribed ranges; opens and/or closes valves and adjusts regulators to control flow of steam or water through pipelines or to blow sludge and scale from pressurized systems.
- Maintains powerhouse log; records readings, fuel consumed, power generated, maintenance work performed, and related records; monitors and maintains sufficient fuel supply.
- Operates computer equipment and programs to input, retrieve, submit and modify data, including interfacing with specialized programs that control equipment.
- Operates and maintains gas turbines, gas compressors, condensate polishers, and water softeners; may clean plant and equipment, test water, and add water treatment chemicals, as required.
- May answer telephones and radios and relays messages as necessary.
- May train and direct student employees or employees in lower pay grade; may participate in training new employees.
- May assist other tradespersons as required.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Formal training in stationary engineer program (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities). License/Certification: Current third class license as a Stationary Steam Engineer issued by Ohio Department of Industrial Relations.
Knowledge Of: Installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of powerhouse equipment; Water treatment procedures.
Skill In: Operating powerhouse equipment (e.g., gas, oil-fired boilers, turbines, electronic controls, etc.); Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone.
Ability To: Train and provide effective work direction to other employees; Manage time effectively and set priorities; Recognise threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action; Apply safety practices; Interpret and apply blueprints and schematics; Perform basic mathematics; Read technical information, write work instructions, and accurately follow oral and written instructions; Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds; Maintain accurate records; Identify items which are the same or different; Utilise standard computer equipment and programs to input, retrieve, submit and modify data; Use computer equipment and programs which provide guidance on the operation of equipment; Utilise email, internet, desktop software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with coal, gas, and oil fired boilers preferred.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: Powerhouse environment; continuous exposure to extreme levels of temperature, loud noise, fumes and potentially dangerous equipment; requires considerable physical effort to include frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds; climbing, stooping, and kneeling; may work varied hours and shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in emergency situations; may require off-campus travel.
Working Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday, 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
