Salary: $40.67 per hour

Basic Function: Supervises the daily operations of police personnel on a designated shift or assignment. Reports to Police Lieutenant, or Associate Director of Public Safety.

Examples of Duties: Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Supervises the daily operations of police personnel.
  • Plans and directs work activities of employees; assigns and monitors work duties and responsibilities.
  • Trains and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
  • Assists in coordinating work flow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized, and policies/procedures are followed.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selection of job applicants and performance evaluation of assigned employees; recommends personnel actions (e.g., termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall) to Police Lieutenant.
  • Assists in communication and enforcing policies and procedures, resolving problems, addressing employee concerns and complaints, and adjusting grievances.
  • Monitors and maintains records of employees' work hours, overtime/compensatory time, sick leave, vacation, performance, and related information; authorizes time worked and recommends approval/disapproval leave requests.
  • Performs duties of Police Lieutenant in his/her absence.
  • Functions as a field-training officer for newly hired officer and as a quartermaster of the Operations Division equipment room.
  • Decides appropriate discipline within the work unit.
  • May conduct specialized training (e.g., CPR, firearms, self-defense, etc.).
  • Performs law enforcement duties (e.g., enforce state laws and University and departmental rules and regulations, patrols University property on foot or in vehicle, provide emergency and nonemergency services, conduct investigations, write reports, perform crime-prevention activities, control and direct traffic, etc.).
  • Attends training, instructional, and supervisory staff meetings.
  • May train and direct student or temporary employees.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience: Ohio Peace Officer training certificate plus a minimum of two years (i.e., 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours) of college level academic credits in Criminal Justice Studies, Law Enforcement, or other job-related field (e.g., political science, psychology, government, sociology, etc.) or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities. A minimum of three years experience as a Police Officer in Kent State University Police Department.

License/Certification: Must possess valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record. Must be PR-24 certified. Must successfully complete a one-year probationary period. Certification to access information from law-enforcement database. Additional certifications may be required.

Knowledge Of: Effective supervisory concepts, techniques, and practices; relevant civil law, criminal law, and labor relations; University and departmental rules and regulations, University law enforcement, first aid and emergency care, and safety practices; location of campus property and facilities.

Skill In: Counseling, leadership, time-management, and priority-setting skills; interpersonal communication, both written and oral, to effectively interact with University personnel; use and maintenance of firearms, use of baton, operation of motor vehicles and other equipment, defensive driving, and self-defense; recognizing threatening or unusual conditions and taking appropriate action.

Ability To: Carry out or assist in implementing changes; make effective decisions in emergency and nonemergency situations; access information on computer and synthesize and analyze information; observe situations objectively and analytically; react quickly and calmly in an emergency and exercise firmness, tact, and impartiality; demonstrate physical fitness; read and comprehend a variety of written material; remember a sequence of events and details; perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and to calculate percentages).

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: Exposed to law-enforcement hazards (e.g., gunfire, driving at high speeds, etc.) and variable weather conditions; occasionally requires extended periods of walking, standing, or physical exertion (e.g., running); may work varied hours and shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays; may be called to work in exigent and emergency situations; requires on- and off-campus travel.
