Salary:

Basic Function: To provide leadership and mentoring of the department in all teaching, research, outreach programs, recruitment and retention initiatives associated with the department; may be responsible for multiple academic units, and the associated faculty, students, and staff. Maintain and enhance a creative, productive, and respectful environment for faculty, staff, and students, and serve as the principal representative and advocate of the department with authority and responsibility for administrative decisions. Required to effectively work with the appropriate consultative bodies (Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC), College Advisory Committee (CAC), Curriculum Committees, Educational Policies Council (EPC), etc). Perform tasks as outlined in the Faculty Association’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The position is accountable to the Dean and the Provost, ensuring that departmental goals and operations align with the broader strategic priorities of the college and university. Reports to Dean, College.

Examples of Duties:

  • Provide leadership for advancing and articulating the mission, vision, and values of the department within the broader mission of the college and Kent State.
  • Foster a culture of transparency that supports the success of a large, and dynamic academic community of faculty, staff, and students.
  • Promote a collaborative attitude that fosters collegiality, civility, and respect among peers, staff and students in classrooms and the work environment.
  • Work cooperatively within the departmental governance structure (FAC, CAC, Curriculum Committees, EPC, etc).
  • Evaluate faculty through the appropriate annual review, promotion, tenure, and renewal process.
  • Oversee curricular development, program review and oversight.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding faculty and staff, assign responsibilities, evaluate performance, and promote faculty, student and staff development.
  • Supervise staff positions that require annual reviews, goal setting, leadership, and oversight.
  • Manage and administer the department budget, allocate resources equitably, and provide leadership in the procurement of financial and structural resources necessary to enable the department’s success.
  • Direct faculty teaching and associated faculty workload.
  • Serve as liaison and advocate for the department within the larger governance structure of the college and university, and with other departments and colleges.
  • Promote the department’s teaching, research, and service obligations to state, regional, national and international audiences.
  • Maintain and enhance existing relationships with stakeholders, community groups, and donors.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a relevant field; experience generally commensurate to the faculty rank as tenured associate professor or be qualified for such rank within the college.

License/Certification:

Knowledge Of: Academic programs, Budgeting, Personnel matters to include faculty relations and university governance

Skill In: Written and interpersonal communication

Ability To: Provide leadership and direction, Analyze situations, Develop effective solutions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Faculty rank as tenured full professor or be qualified for such rank within the college.
