Physical Location: Kent Campus - Kent, OH

Salary: $17.84 - $18.66 (6 month rate)

Basic Function: Functions as a working crew leader over Custodial Workers, Laborers and other classified, temporary or student employees engaged in the care, cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings, furniture and fixtures according to established work rules. Reports to Housekeeping Supervisor, Assistant Housekeeping Manager, Housekeeping Manager, Building and Grounds Supervisor/Superintendent or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties: Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Functions as a working crew leader over other custodial classified, temporary, or student employees engaged in custodial and other related activities.
  • Leads and instructs employees on proper work procedures and policies.
  • Assigns and monitors work activities.
  • Assists in communicating and enforcing policies and procedures. Reports employee concerns, complaints and irregularities to supervisor.
  • Coordinates work flow and schedule to ensure deadlines are met, priorities are recognized and policies and procedures are followed.
  • May participate in the interviewing and selection of job applicants (voluntary basis); may recommend personnel actions (e.g., hiring, termination, promotion, discipline, layoff/recall).
  • Issues supplies and equipment to custodial employees.
  • Inspects work to verify satisfactory completion of assigned duties.
  • Reports evidence of fire, illegal entry and theft of property.
  • Monitors supply levels; may assist in reordering inventory stock.
  • Inspects equipment; may perform minor maintenance or make arrangements for repair.
  • Performs custodial duties (e.g., cleans floor surfaces, carpets, furniture and fixtures).
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: A minimum of one year custodial experience.

License/Certification: Valid Ohio driver's license, if required to perform position.

Knowledge Of:

Skill In: Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to gather information about breakdowns, to schedule equipment repairs, to transmit work directives)

Ability To:

  • Plan and direct work activities, to manage time effectively, and set priorities.
  • Resolve problems independently and make decisions.
  • Carry out or assist in implementing changes.
  • Diagnose problems and determine appropriate action.
  • Operate cleaning equipment.
  • Read (e.g., training material, work schedules), write (e.g., correspondence, accident reports), and accurately follow oral and written instructions.
  • Demonstrate physical dexterity and to lift 75 pounds.
  • Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals and to calculate percentages).
  • Operate computer for data entry/retrieval.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements: Exposed to direct, odors, heights, cleaning chemicals, variable temperatures and weather conditions; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting of 50 pounds, occasional lifting of 75 pounds (e.g., furniture); frequent stooping and bending and extended periods of standing and walking; required to work varied shifts and hours and occasional weekends and holidays; may require on- and off-campus travel.

Working Schedule: Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
