Primary Function
Responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. Interaction with surgeons, nurses, and OR team is vital to ensure proper products are available at the time of surgery.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room, Sterile Processing area, and durable patient care equipment.
- Operate and be responsible for sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, and endoscope reprocessors, including performing high-level disinfection and maintaining records.
- Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual techniques and automated systems; conduct visual inspections and operational testing.
- Understand cleaning protocols and appropriate use of agents/detergents for all instruments.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function, and wear before assembly.
- Assemble instrument trays and equipment, wrapping or pouching items per size and type using proper techniques.
- Perform challenge tests on sterilizers, interpret parameters to ensure proper function.
- Check OR schedule daily to prioritize surgical cases.
- Coordinate with Supply Chain to organize supplies for each surgical case, including last-minute additions.
- Comply with federal, state, AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
- Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment and identify when professional service is needed.
- Maintain and distribute sterile supplies, crash carts, and other items hospital-wide.
- Practice Universal Precautions.
- Participate in and lead process improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned and provide additional support as needed.
Job Qualifications
- Preferably 6 months of Surgical Services experience.
- HSPA CRCST certification required.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Skills in inventory management, problem solving, communication, team leadership, and multitasking.
- Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office.
