Freelance Opportunity – Quantity Surveyor (Rail civil engineering projects)

Location:

  • 2–3 days per week in Ashford, Kent
  • 2–3 days working from home

Rate:

  • £350 per day
  • Outside IR35 / Limited Company engagement

Overview

We are working with a long-standing Commercial Manager client within a national civil engineering contractor who specialise in rail infrastructure projects across the UK. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain strong framework exposure within rail and NEC contract environments.

Project Scope

  • High-volume minor capital works (typically up to £100k per project)
  • Full subcontracted delivery model (no self-delivery)
  • Potential future involvement in larger civils schemes (up to £5m) through the Eastern Routes Partnership, including:
  • Station buildings
  • Bridges
  • Civils & geotechnical works
  • Ancillary rail infrastructure

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing and taking ownership of multiple minor works packages
  • Pricing and cost management (straightforward schemes)
  • Liaising directly with client representatives
  • Managing subcontractor accounts end-to-end
  • Working closely with Project & Delivery Managers daily
  • Handling applications, valuations, and payments
  • Supporting contract administration via CEMAR:
  • Early Warning Notices (EWNs)
  • Compensation Events

Requirements

  • 2–3+ years’ experience within civils / infrastructure
  • Basic understanding of NEC contracts
  • Strong communication and organisation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple small-value projects simultaneously
