Freelance Opportunity - Quantity Surveyor (Rail civil engineering projects)
Location: 2-3 days per week in Ashford, Kent; 2-3 days working from home
Rate: £350 per day Outside IR35 / Limited Company engagement
Overview
We are working with a long-standing Commercial Manager client within a national civil engineering contractor who specialise in rail infrastructure projects across the UK. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain strong framework exposure within rail and NEC contract environments.
Project Scope
- High-volume minor capital works (typically up to £100k per project)
- Full subcontracted delivery model (no self-delivery)
- Potential future involvement in larger civils schemes (up to £5m) through the Eastern Routes Partnership, including:
- Station buildings
- Bridges
- Civils & geotechnical works
- Ancillary rail infrastructure
Key Responsibilities
- Managing and taking ownership of multiple minor works packages
- Pricing and cost management (straightforward schemes)
- Liaising directly with client representatives
- Managing subcontractor accounts end-to-end
- Working closely with Project & Delivery Managers daily
- Handling applications, valuations, and payments
- Supporting contract administration via CEMAR: Early Warning Notices (EWNs), Compensation Events
Requirements
- 2-3+ years' experience within civils / infrastructure
- Basic understanding of NEC contracts
- Strong communication and organisation skills
- Ability to manage multiple small-value projects simultaneously
