The predicted salary is between 800 - 1400 £ per month.

This is a two-year fixed term position. Under the supervision of the Sports Grounds Manager, the Sports Ground Apprentice will assist in maintaining sports pitches, tennis courts, frontages, perimeters, grassed and planted areas to the standards required, making those facilities available for use by students, staff and members of the wider community. The skills required to become a competent grounds person will be acquired whilst working at the sports ground. The postholder will be given the necessary time to study and complete apprenticeship assignments. By the end of the apprenticeship, the postholder will know when, how and why the range of maintenance operations are carried out.

Responsibilities

  • To maintain pitches, tennis courts, frontages, perimeters, grassed and planted areas to the standards required, under the supervision of the Sports Grounds Manager and/or Senior Sports Grounds Person.
  • To be aware of, understand and implement all Health & Safety procedures in relation to the operation of the Ground including the implementation of Risk Assessments, COSHH, duty of care, specific systems of work and other mandatory regulations to ensure the Grounds team and Grounds users are always working within a safe environment.
  • To drive and operate vehicles, plant and equipment as authorised, including loading and unloading in accordance with agreed operating procedures and manufacturers operating guidelines.
  • To be responsible for conducting general day-to-day maintenance and cleaning checks and reporting equipment or vehicle faults promptly through approved procedure.
  • To ensure equipment and tools are stored safely and securely in approved storage locations.
  • To provide an excellent customer service, always operating efficiently and effectively.
  • To employ a flexible approach to personal working hours and be available for duty for evening and weekend bookings when agreed in advance.

Qualifications and Skills

The Sports Ground Apprentice position at the University’s Tolworth Court sportsground will typically take 24 months to complete their education and training. Entry requirements for the Sports Ground Apprentice role will typically be a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 9-4 (including Maths and English and Science) or other equivalent vocational qualifications. If the successful applicant is without the above levels of qualifications, they will have to ensure they achieve level 1 in English and Maths as part of their Apprenticeship. Applicants should be willing to learn, take instructions, have a strong work ethic including pride in work, and be punctual at all times.

Training

Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment. The applicant will be working towards and gain a Level 2 Sports Turf Operative Apprenticeship. The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship. The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship. Depending on which apprenticeship pathway your employer chooses to offer within horticulture, you may also need to achieve all or a combination of the following courses before taking your end point assessment: Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work, Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance, Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides and Abrasive Wheel.
