Would you like to be part of Vital Energi's strategy of growth? If so, we are looking for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing Project Development team. This role could be based at our head office in Blackburn, Glasgow, or London. We are flexible on location.

We support hospitals, universities, new build developments, towns and cities as well as industrial and commercial clients to decarbonise their buildings. About the Role: Reporting to the Principal Engineer, you will carry out a wide range of electrical design tasks across industrial, commercial, and public sector projects. This includes concept and detailed design during pre‑construction and tender stages, reviewing third‑party drawings/specifications, and contributing to PCSAs and investment‑grade proposals. You will be part of a team of electrical engineers responsible for designing electrical plant layouts, switch‑rooms, substations, cable and equipment sizing, lighting and containment systems, and general building services. HV design experience is a plus. In addition, you will manage and support junior engineers, assign tasks, review work, and ensure project deliverables are met on time and within programme.
Key Duties:
- Electrical design work during pre‑construction stages and during project delivery as required by the department workload.
- Responsible for the timely execution of electrical design deliverables on tender/bid projects.
- Day‑to‑day decision making on tenders and projects; providing advice to internal stakeholders and clients.
- Takes a holistic view in the selection and application of engineering concepts and solutions.
- Represent Vital Energi at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractors.
- Ensure engineering calculations and drawings meet required robust industry and legal standards.
- Survey and report on existing electrical installations.
- Work within multi‑disciplinary, work‑winning teams to deliver technically compliant tenders.
- Lead the coordination of engineering services.
- Engage equipment vendor/supply chain to ensure electrical equipment selections are valid, technically compliant, value for money and available within programme.
- Have an awareness of cost implications within design.
- Assist in effectively dealing with design issues and minimizing their impact.
- Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation.
- Liaise with external designers, customers and Vital Energi in‑house project teams.
- Compliance with CDM requirements and our in‑house design processes.
- Ability to design systems in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection, detailed drawings and provide inputs for control operating strategies.
- Ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice with company procedures.
Skills and Experience:
The person will ideally be qualified at degree level or similar (HNC/HND) with a minimum of 3‑5 years relevant experience working for a consultancy or contractor. Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel). Experience using Trimble ProDesign (Amtech). Good understanding of the latest edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. Sound knowledge of electrical building services design. Ability to prioritise own workload and work to deadlines. Sound knowledge and working application of key health and safety issues and legislation. Chairing/facilitation of meeting skills.
