KDR have partnered with a business at the forefront of data-driven innovation in the insurance industry, with a clear mission to make insurance smarter through technology and analytics. As Data Engineering Manager, you’ll take ownership of a critical GCP-based data platform, balancing hands-on technical delivery with leadership of a high-performing engineering team. Your work will directly support smarter risk modelling, improved customer experience, and more efficient operational decision-making. Reporting to the Head of Data, you’ll shape technical direction, guide architecture decisions, and mentor engineers while remaining close to the code and core platform.
What you’ll do
- Lead & Deliver: Manage and develop a team of data engineers while contributing hands-on to the design and delivery of scalable, secure data solutions.
- Own Platform Strategy: Define and evolve the data platform architecture to support analytics, BI, and operational use cases across the business.
- Stakeholder Leadership: Partner with actuarial, claims, underwriting, and corporate teams to translate complex requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Champion Automation: Drive a GCP-native medallion architecture using BigQuery for Bronze/Silver/Gold datasets, Dataform for transformations, Cloud Storage for ingestion, and fine-grained IAM controls.
- Integrate & Scale: Oversee ingestion and integration of internal and external data sources, including market feeds and regulatory datasets, using Pub/Sub, Dataflow, and API-based pipelines.
- Enable Better Decisions: Ensure data products directly support pricing strategies, claims processing, service improvements, and commercial outcomes.
- Ensure Reliability: Maintain high standards for availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency across all data solutions.
What you’ll bring
- Proven experience leading data engineering teams in production environments.
- Strong hands-on background across modern data engineering and cloud platforms.
- End-to-end ownership of data platforms, from design through to optimisation.
- Strong experience with:
- Data pipelines, modelling, warehousing, and platform design.
- Google BigQuery, Looker, and GCP-native medallion architectures.
- Building data platforms on Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Storage, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Dataproc, Dataform, Vertex AI).
- CI/CD, release management, and DevOps practices (Cloud Build, Cloud Deploy).
- Agile delivery and continuous improvement.
