  • Electrical, Control & Instrumentation Engineer (Contract) Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to support a Research & Technology (R&T) programme focused on the development of a new laboratory test facility.

The project will involve the design, build and commissioning of a test means where fuel is heated within a fuel tank under controlled conditions.

The successful engineer will take ownership of the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation work package, developing the electrical architecture from concept through to detailed design, procurement, build support and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities Electrical Architecture & Design

  • Lead the Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) work package.
  • Develop the electrical architecture from concept design through to a manufacturable solution.
  • Define and specify electrical power distribution, control and instrumentation systems.
  • Produce detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and supporting design documentation.
  • Undertake equipment selection, component sizing and specification activities.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant electrical standards, regulations and safety requirements.

Package Ownership Manage and deliver the following sub-packages

  • Heating Systems
  • Electrical Supply & Control
  • Instrumentation
  • Data Acquisition
  • Procurement & Configuration Management
  • Generate and maintain Electrical Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Support procurement activities including supplier engagement and component selection.
  • Ensure design documentation remains controlled and up to date throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Reviews, Build & Commissioning
  • Support and present technical solutions at design reviews.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful integration.
  • Provide engineering support during build, installation and commissioning activities.
  • Support fault finding, testing and validation activities as required.

Deliverables The engineer will be responsible for producing

  • Electrical architecture drawings and system layouts.
  • Detailed electrical schematics and manufacturing drawings.
  • Comprehensive Electrical Bill of Materials (BOM), including manufacturer details and part numbers.
  • Supporting technical documentation required for design reviews, procurement and commissioning.
  • Technical Capability Essential Experience
  • Electrical system design for industrial, laboratory or test facility environments.
  • Control and instrumentation systems design.
  • Electrical power distribution systems.
  • Earthing and bonding design.
  • Electrical heater control systems.
  • Safety circuits and electrical protection systems.
  • Development of designs from concept through to detailed design and implementation.
  • Tools & Standards
  • Auto CAD Electrical (or equivalent electrical design package).
  • Knowledge of relevant electrical regulations and standards.
  • Experience producing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.

Desirable Experience

  • DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) awareness or experience.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, test rig or special-purpose equipment projects.
  • Data acquisition systems integration.
  • Commissioning and acceptance testing of EC&I systems.
