The Opportunity: We are working with a leading plant hire business based in Hemel Hempstead who are looking for an experienced Service Manager to take ownership of a busy and high-performing service operation. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on Service Manager who enjoys leading from the front, managing people, improving performance and ensuring a large fleet remains operational, compliant and ready to meet customer demand.

You will be responsible for managing a fleet of approximately 1,200 units and leading a team of around 25 fitters and mobile engineers, ensuring the service department operates safely, efficiently and effectively. This role would suit an experienced Service Manager from a plant hire, construction equipment, heavy engineering or similar environment who thrives in a fast-paced operational setting.

  • Taking full ownership of the service department and driving performance daily.
  • Leading, motivating and developing a team of fitters and engineers.
  • Managing servicing, inspections, repairs and breakdown response across a large fleet.
  • Ensuring equipment is maintained to a high standard and available to meet customer requirements.
  • Working closely with the Workshop Supervisor and wider operational teams.
  • Reducing downtime and improving service efficiency.
  • Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and cost savings.
  • Maintaining high standards of health & safety, compliance and quality.
  • Delivering team briefings and toolbox talks to ensure clear communication.
  • Supporting a positive and productive engineering culture.

What we are looking for: We are looking for an experienced Service Manager with:

  • Previous experience managing a service, workshop or engineering operation.
  • A background within plant hire, construction equipment, heavy engineering or a similar environment.
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams, fitters or mobile engineers.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with excellent problem-solving ability.
  • The confidence to make decisions and drive improvements in a busy environment.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance, servicing and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with plant equipment and an NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance (or equivalent) would be advantageous.
