SYSTEMS ENGINEER

GT3 Endurance Racing

KCMG is seeking an experienced and technically minded Systems Engineer to join our high-performance GT3 endurance racing programmes.

This is a key engineering role within the KCMG engineering group, focused on the reliable operation, integration and development of the vehicle's electronic, control and data systems.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Engineering, Race Engineers, Performance Engineers, drivers and technical personnel to ensure the car's systems operate reliably and provide the engineering team with accurate, high-quality data throughout testing and racing.

THE ROLE

As Systems Engineer, you will take responsibility for the vehicle systems and associated engineering processes that support car performance, reliability and data quality.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and supporting the vehicle's electronic and control systems.
  • Monitoring and analysing vehicle system performance and reliability.
  • Managing the car's data acquisition and logging systems.
  • Ensuring accurate and reliable collection of vehicle data.
  • Supporting telemetry and live data systems.
  • Configuring and validating sensors, channels and system parameters.
  • Investigating system faults and identifying root causes.
  • Working with Race and Performance Engineers to identify data or system issues affecting performance.
  • Supporting the integration of vehicle systems and electronic components.
  • Maintaining system configuration and engineering documentation.
  • Preparing and validating systems prior to testing and race events.
  • Monitoring system health throughout track sessions.
  • Supporting engineers with system troubleshooting and technical analysis.
  • Managing system checks, calibration and validation procedures.
  • Supporting reliability development and fault prevention.
  • Working with technical suppliers and manufacturers where required.
  • Contributing to the continuous development of the vehicle systems package.

VEHICLE SYSTEMS

The role requires a strong understanding of how the electronic and control systems within a modern GT3 race car interact.

Areas of responsibility may include:

  • Data acquisition and logging.
  • Telemetry.
  • CAN systems and vehicle communications.
  • Sensors and signal acquisition.
  • ECU and vehicle control systems.
  • Engine and powertrain systems.
  • Gearbox and transmission systems.
  • Brake and chassis-related systems.
  • Steering and driver controls.
  • Vehicle electronics.
  • Power distribution and electrical systems.
  • System monitoring and diagnostics.
  • Timing and positioning systems.
  • Radio and communications interfaces.
  • Driver displays and controls.

You will be expected to understand not only whether a system is functioning, but how its behaviour affects the car and the engineering team's ability to analyse and operate it.

DATA & ENGINEERING

High-quality data is fundamental to modern motorsport.

The Systems Engineer will work closely with the wider engineering group to ensure that data is accurate, consistent and available when required.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Checking data quality and sensor integrity.
  • Identifying abnormal or inconsistent signals.
  • Supporting engineers with data-channel configuration.
  • Investigating discrepancies between expected and measured system behaviour.
  • Supporting analysis of system performance and reliability.
  • Ensuring correct configuration of logging systems.
  • Maintaining accurate system and sensor documentation.
  • Supporting data correlation between testing and race events.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve data quality and system reliability.

The role will also require close communication with Performance Engineers and Race Engineers to ensure that system limitations or anomalies are understood quickly and correctly.

TRACKSIDE ENGINEERING

At the circuit, you will be an important part of the technical engineering operation.

You will be responsible for:

  • Preparing vehicle systems prior to running.
  • Conducting system checks and validation procedures.
  • Monitoring system performance during sessions.
  • Responding quickly to system faults.
  • Supporting fault diagnosis and rectification.
  • Maintaining accurate system configuration throughout an event.
  • Supporting setup and engineering changes where system configuration is involved.
  • Working closely with mechanics and engineers to resolve technical issues.
  • Supporting long-duration endurance running.
  • Ensuring systems remain reliable throughout the demands of a race weekend.

The Nürburgring environment presents particular challenges, with long lap distances, significant variations in track conditions, changing weather, traffic and extended endurance running.

The ability to identify a developing systems issue before it becomes a race-ending problem will be highly valued.

TESTING & DEVELOPMENT

The Systems Engineer will also contribute to the team's testing and development programme.

This will include:

  • Preparing vehicle systems for test programmes.
  • Supporting new sensor and system installations.
  • Validating system changes.
  • Analysing system performance during testing.
  • Investigating reliability issues.
  • Supporting the development of improved system configurations.
  • Recording and communicating test results.
  • Working with the engineering team to prioritise system improvements.
  • Supporting the preparation of technical reports and documentation.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for an experienced engineer with a strong technical foundation and a genuine interest in vehicle systems and motorsport.

You will ideally have:

  • Professional experience in motorsport, automotive engineering, vehicle engineering or a comparable technical environment.
  • Experience working with vehicle electronics, control systems or data acquisition.
  • A strong understanding of sensors, signals and system behaviour.
  • Familiarity with CAN communication and vehicle data systems.
  • Experience with data logging, telemetry or motorsport control systems.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • A methodical approach to technical problem solving.
  • Good understanding of electrical and electronic systems.
  • The ability to work effectively with engineers, mechanics and technical suppliers.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • The ability to remain calm and logical under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • A willingness to work extended hours, weekends and race events as required.

Previous GT3, endurance racing or Nürburgring experience would be advantageous.
