This role would suit a hands-on heating engineer who wants to transition into an office-based surveyor position, using their practical, site-based experience to accurately diagnose defects, develop compliant solutions, and produce detailed technical reports without moving away from their core mechanical expertise.
What You’ll be doing:
As the M&E Surveyor, you will contribute specialist mechanical expertise, particularly in heating, ventilation, and associated building services systems to support integrated design and maintenance solutions. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of Building and Civil Engineering, Mechanical, and Electrical surveyors, delivering thorough condition surveys and technical analysis of mechanical and electrical (M&E) defects. The role involves producing clear, detailed reports and scopes of work, including recommended solutions and robust cost estimates for proposed remedial works.
As part of delivering this role, you will typically be:
- Undertaking general surveys and provide recommendations regarding Survey Requests generated via the Company Help Desk
- Working with the Surveys Lead and the Estates Surveyors to ensure that all planned surveys are carried out as per the Planned Maintenance survey programme in accordance with APCGM
- Carrying out a wide range of surveying related duties across the Naval Base including but not restricted to:
- Professional assessment of the requirement
- Providing a detailed summary of the item(s) under inspection
- Liaising with client about the options available
- Considering all H&S and Environmental issues
- Consulting with service provider / sub-contractor with regard to deliverables, fitness for purpose and value for money
- Maintaining all Estate reporting mechanisms in accordance with Company related quality guidelines and adherence to H&S and environmental issues
- Populating and maintaining all electronic data collection using internal databases to provide technical reports
- Providing all relevant data and information for projects entered onto the FWP (Forward Works Plan)
- Providing accurate appraisals of buildings systems, infrastructure and utilities based on knowledge, experience and professional training
You’ll Have:
- Professional and proactive heating engineering experience gained working in the construction industry or similar FM environment
- Construction site safety requirements knowledge
- A good knowledge of building systems technology and pathology
- Interpersonal skills to be able to operate at a fully competent level working as part of a team and independently at times
- A good working knowledge of the building regulations, CDM and appropriate legislation
- Knowledge of and ability to apply construction/systems related Health & Safety legislation and good practice through technical simplification where necessary
- Strategic thinking and display a knowledge of and understanding of statutory requirements, current regulations and approved codes of practice
- Relevant experience of using all Microsoft packages, particularly Outlook, Word and Excel, and familiarity with databases
About you:
- Minimum HNC in a mechanical and/or electrical surveying/engineering discipline
- Competent training skills, in areas such as:
- Heating engineering
- 18th Edition
- Asbestos
- Working at Height
- Confined Spaces
- MEWP licence
- Skilled Climber etc.
- Gas-safe certification is desirable
