As a key member of the Engineering, Assurance and Compliance Team (EnACT), the Electrical Engineer will play a critical role in delivering technical governance and assurance across electrical systems and equipment at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. This position ensures that all electrical infrastructure is safe to operate, reliable, and fully compliant with relevant legislative and regulatory standards.
With a strong background in electrical engineering and qualifications to HNC level or higher, you will bring proven experience and a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions within a complex maritime environment. Your expertise will support the integrity of power distribution networks, control systems, and critical electrical assets that underpin operational capability across the site.
You will take ownership of technical challenges, oversee the acceptance and commissioning of electrical components in infrastructure projects, and ensure alignment with design intent and operational requirements. Furthermore, your responsibilities will include supporting the development of safety management systems for designated electrical asset groups, strategic infrastructure planning, and contributing to business improvement initiatives.
Ideally, you will be a qualified electrical engineer with at least five years' experience in the discipline, holding professional membership with a recognised technical body and actively working towards IEng accreditation or equivalent. Your background will include health and safety training such as IOSH Managing Safely, CITB SMSTS, CSCS or similar, equipping you to operate confidently within a regulated and safety-critical environment.
We are looking for someone who can maintain a systems-level perspective while also understanding the detail behind electrical component design and investigative rationale. You will have a good understanding of statutory and regulatory electrical compliance and be capable of safely meeting operational demands across all areas of Portsmouth Naval Base. A working knowledge of electrical systems used in an industrial environment is highly beneficial, alongside solid expertise in power distribution, control systems, and rotating electrical machinery.
By seeing the bigger picture, you will be able to understand the wider strategic goals. Your decision-making will be considered within your limits of authority, and you will be expected to escalate for direction as appropriate. You will have a solid grounding in electrical engineering and be able to support colleagues in resolving complex technical challenges, contributing to a collaborative and solutions-focused environment.
Good communication and influencing skills are highly desirable where you will establish clear communication routes, actively listen, provide and seek feedback. As a customer-facing role, you will be comfortable engaging with stakeholders and representing the organisation with credibility. Additionally, your organisational skills will ensure that you plan ahead, set clear objectives, manage time and resources efficiently, and regularly review progress to drive continuous improvement. Above all, you will live and endorse the company's values, embedding them into your daily work and interactions.
