Job Description
Nuclear Operations Expert
The Role
The UK government is fully committed to our independent, continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and through its 'triple lock pledge', to delivering the upgrades and programmes necessary to maintain and renew the country's defence nuclear capabilities. The scale and complexity of the work required is a critical National Endeavour, and includes substantial investment in infrastructure development across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. KBR is supporting the delivery of this new capability. The nuclear operations expert will work with ESH&Q, Operations, Technical and project teams to ensure that that the operational and capability goals are delivered effectively and efficiently, whilst complying with
statutory and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Nuclear Skills capability lead the individual will:
Defence Nuclear Sector Expertise:
- Apply a deep understanding of the defence nuclear sector's unique requirements to deliver tailored solutions that meet both client and regulatory expectations across KBRs portfolio of nuclear work.
- Provide expert knowledge and understanding of delivering operational capability in high hazard environments.
- Contribute to and lead the coordination of multidisciplinary teams in delivering project goals within the constraints of nuclear and defence-specific regulations, standards, and security measures.
- Ensure that project deliverables align with MOD (Ministry of Defence) and UK regulatory standards, including those set by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
- Support and contribute to bids and proposals.
Risk and Change Management:
- Lead the identification, assessment, and management of risks related to nuclear safety and project execution, ensuring that proactive mitigation strategies are in place.
- Support clients through the change management process, addressing technical, organisational, and safety-related impacts resulting from project decisions.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with senior-level clients, regulatory bodies, and key stakeholders, serving as a trusted advisor throughout the project.
- Provide expert recommendations on complex operational issues, ensuring that all stakeholders understand the rationale and the strategic benefits of recommended actions.
- Facilitate high-level meetings and presentations to communicate technical and strategic information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Team Leadership and Development:
- Mentor and develop junior consultants, providing guidance on both technical and consulting skill development.
- Contribute to the development of thought leadership within the nuclear defence sector by authoring white papers, case studies, and leading workshops.
Experience Requirements
Experience
Applied Understanding of Nuclear Operations in a Defence Environment:
Experience of directing operations at defence nuclear facilities. Demonstrable experience in applying nuclear safety cases, ensuring alignment with both MOD and regulatory standards.
Strategic Capability Requirements Management Throughout the Project Lifecycle: Proven experience in managing strategic capability requirements from project inception through completion, ensuring projects meet all technical, operational, and regulatory objectives.
This role offers the opportunity to work on some of the most complex and impactful projects within the UK's nuclear and defence sectors.
Technical Skills/Knowledge
- Understanding of systems thinking, programme management, operations, and interlinkage of complex capabilities.
- Strong knowledge of nuclear and conventional operations, safety regulations and governance with experience in
- active commissioning.
- Strong written and verbal communication, including technical writing and stakeholder management skills and
- experience.
- Ability to motivate and lead project personnel, including coordinating activities and ensuring alignment with
- project goals.

- Degree in Science essential
- Must be UK National with 10 year footprint in the UK
This role is part time, 3 days per week – hybrid/client offices in Aldermaston/ Reading.
