Defence Land Systems Safety/Certification Engineer — Salary £48,000 – £58,000
Location: Bristol, Gloucester, Leatherhead, Burton, Manchester or Plymouth
Working pattern: Hybrid working between office, client sites and home

We are seeking a Safety / Certification Engineer to support the delivery of safety assurance and certification activities across Defence Land Systems, including armoured vehicles, autonomous systems, weapons platforms, and supporting infrastructure. You will work across the full lifecycle from concept through to in-service support, in a client-facing role requiring strong technical expertise, clear communication, and the ability to manage complex stakeholder environments. You will typically operate with limited guidance, take initiative, and have the capability to project manage medium-sized, low to medium risk projects. Frazer-Nash Consultancy provides safety, assurance and certification services to the UK and other countries for the defence land environment.
Responsibilities
- Support safety assurance and certification activities across Defence Land Systems (including armoured vehicles, autonomous systems, weapons platforms, and supporting infrastructure).
- Ensure systems are safe, compliant and fit for purpose across the lifecycle from concept to in‑service support.
- Engage in client delivery work with strong stakeholder management and clear communication.
- Project manage medium-sized, low to medium risk projects as required.
- Develop portfolio of project deliveries and mentor junior engineers and graduates.
- Collaborate with multi-discipline engineers and contribute to safety, certification, legislation compliance, and safety/environmental case development.
Essential Requirements
- Engineering background with experience in safety engineering within Defence, aerospace, rail, or other safety‑critical industries.
- Knowledge of UK Defence safety standards (e.g. ASEMS, POSMS, JSPs, Def Stan 00-056 or similar frameworks).
- Understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle processes.
- Experience producing safety cases and hazard management documentation.
- Strong methodical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Holds a degree or has equivalent experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Is IEng accredited or working towards accreditation.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience with land systems (e.g. armoured vehicles, tracked/wheeled platforms, weapons systems).
- Experience of working in or with DE&S Safety & Roadworthiness experience.
- Familiarity with Land certification processes and regulatory engagement.
- Experience in autonomous or robotic systems safety.
- Professional registration (e.g. working towards or Chartered Engineer status).
- Pre-employment screening and UK National Security Vetting clearance suitability may be required.
