These roles are replacement positions within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital, focusing on Undergraduate Medical Education. As a Trust, we prioritise staff wellbeing and offer extensive support to help maintain it. Our Health and Wellbeing team received a National Award in 2020 for their local initiatives.
These posts are designed for post-foundation year doctors interested in a medical educational role at The Academy in Swindon, working with medical students from the University of Bristol (UoB), Oxford (UoO), and King's College London (KCL). The positions are suitable for doctors considering a break before higher medical training, those wishing to pause their training programme (subject to approval), or those pursuing academic careers aiming for higher degrees such as an MSc or MD/PhD. The posts comprise an educational component (80%) delivered at the Academy and a supernumerary clinical component (20%), or a 50/50 clinical and educational ward-based role.
Applicants may choose to apply for both the office-based Clinical Teaching Fellow (CTF) and ward-based teaching roles, indicating their preference if successful. The responsibilities outlined are subject to change based on service needs.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe CTFs collaborate daily with the Academy Undergraduate Manager, administrators, and clinical tutors responsible for organising teaching programmes and clinical placements, ensuring sessions are scheduled and delivered appropriately. Regular communication with clinical tutors and colleagues is essential. Formal meetings will be held throughout the year to review and plan the courses, with each CTF developing and maintaining an individual or group Outlook Calendar.
An Office-Based CTF is expected to work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00, with one day spent in a clinical specialty. Flexibility in hours is acknowledged due to workload variability. Ward-based CTFs assigned to ED and/or ITU (with 6-12 month rotations) will typically work alternating weeks of clinical duties and Academy work, including some weekends. Since students will be present at the Academy only part of the year, the educational activities should be averaged over the entire period to reflect varying levels of engagement.
