The Department of Geography and Environment at Loughborough University is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on the Leverhulme Trust Research Leadership Award–funded project “Geographies of example: Finding the example within the exception and beyond (GeoEx)”. The project, led by Dr Azmeary Ferdoush, spans Geography, Sociology, Politics and Anthropology.

Salary: £35,608 to £46,049 per annum (subject to annual pay review)

Role: full‑time, fixed‑term for 42 months starting 1 September 2026, hybrid with on‑site work at Loughborough University and ethnographic fieldwork in Bangladesh and occasional trips to the UK and Finland.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts ethnographic research in Bangladesh and other field sites, including semi‑structured interviews with protection seekers and marginalised communities.
  • Designs, executes and disseminates research activities in accordance with project objectives.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members across Geography, Sociology, Politics and Anthropology.
  • Contributes to academic outputs, including publications, conference presentations and public outreach.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Geography, Sociology, Politics, Anthropology or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong English-language skills (and other language skills mentioned in the desirable criteria).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with semi‑structured interviews in the context of protection or marginalised communities.
