We are seeking contractors with Law expertise and academic experience to deliver online modules for the University of Essex Online. You will support the learning of online students. Further information on our programmes can be found at.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead online teaching sessions
  • Hold office hours
  • Monitor and contribute to discussion forums
  • Provide students with examples from your own practice
  • Assess and moderate formative and summative assessments
  • Provide appropriate feedback and advice to students
  • Reply to student emails
  • Respond to academic queries, including those based on existing module content

If you are interested in undertaking supervision, this would include:

  • Meet and support students on their final projects/dissertations
  • Mark and double‑mark projects/dissertations

If you are interested in undertaking content development work, this would include:

  • Create lecturecasts
  • Design assessment
  • Create multiple‑choice questions and other formative activities

Qualifications, experience and abilities:

You will have academic experience and expertise in one or more subject areas outlined above. We typically look for contractors that can tutor at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Criterion (all essential unless otherwise stated):

  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent or have substantial industry experience (for postgraduate activities)
  • Educated to at least master’s level or equivalent in a relevant field
  • HE teaching qualification and/or Fellowship/Senior/Principal Fellowship of Advance HE
  • A record of research or scholarly activity or industry experience (desirable)
  • Experience of HE teaching, including seminars/tutorials
  • Experience of using platforms such as Zoom/Teams to teach online and/or lead other activity online
  • Experience of using a virtual learning environment
  • Experience of HE assessment marking and moderation
  • Experience of HE dissertation / final year project supervision, including ethics forms (for supervision only)
  • Experience of developing HE content and assessment (for content development only)
  • Ability to mark appropriately and provide excellent feedback to students that supports learning
  • Ability to develop content that enhances learning and employability (for content development only)
  • Ability to be engaging within seminars and/or supervision meetings
  • Ability to appropriately assess ethics forms (for supervision only)
  • Ability to overcome challenges of online delivery
  • Ability to answer questions clearly
  • Ability to support students with their learning
  • Ability to encourage student input within seminars and/or supervision meetings

Eligibility:

We can only consider candidates who are UK residents. UK residency typically means you must reside in the UK for at least 183 days per tax year. Due to the freelance nature of this role, we cannot accept applications from candidates on a student visa (previously a tier 4 visa). To undertake contractor work with Kaplan Higher Education UK you would need a reliable internet connection, a personal laptop/PC with MS Edge, and a smartphone or device with MS Authenticator.

The process has three stages: application stage (criteria 1‑10), activities stage (2‑4 tasks, criteria 11‑14) and interview stage (criteria 15‑18). The activities stage includes a marking exercise, a video task, an ethics task (for supervision) and a content development task (for content development). Interviews will take place on Friday 15th May 2026; earlier invites may be issued at the latest on Friday 8th May. Contractor onboarding is a one‑week programme starting Tuesday 26th May 2026.
