Qualifications:

  • Valid WV teaching certification or WVDE teaching permit or substitute permit.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • WVSSAC certification.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Cooperates with building principal and athletic director.
  • Develops rapport with coaching staff within the school.
  • Organises coaching staff.
  • Develops positive relationships with participants, student body, faculty, parents, community, officials, news media, and opponents.
  • Employs appropriate conduct during practices and games.
  • Attends league, conference and WVSSAC meetings.
  • Participates in activities that foster growth and development.
  • Motivates staff and players toward desired goals.
  • Commands respect by example in appearance, manners, behaviour and language.

Coaching and Related Area:

  • Develops high calibre and quality instruction.
  • Teaches fundamental skills.
  • Handles athletic injuries.
  • Cares for equipment.
  • Supervises participants and disciplines team appropriately.
  • Designs quality organisation of practice sessions.
  • Designs pre-season planning.
  • Supervises managers and other support personnel.
  • Manages budget and follows purchasing procedures.
  • Initiates game organisational skills.
  • Follows league, conference and WVSSAC policies.
  • Devotes time and energy to coaching duties.
  • Follows end of season procedures.
  • Completes WVSSAC Training & Certification Program and takes KCS Staff Development Training on Concussions.

Other Requirements:

  • Non-Teaching Applicants must complete WVSSAC Training and Certification Program (Estimated Cost: $250.00).
  • Apply for position(s) annually.
  • Submit to Criminal Background Check (Estimated Cost: $47.25) and Substance Screening Test.
  • Be eligible and apply for certification as Coach through the WV Department of Education (Estimated Cost: $35.00).
  • Keep certification valid and current (Estimated Annual Cost: $35.00).
  • Attend Kanawha County Schools' Orientation Requirements for Certified Teachers.
  • New TEACHERS hired after July 1, 2012 must have completed the three-hour training session provided by Kanawha County Schools and complete the Online Concussion Awareness Course through the KCS Staff Development Site (Cost of the course will be $15.00).
