Description

Extended School Year - 2026 Position: Contracted Bus Monitor Aide

Qualifications: Proper certification as required.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Employment Term: Contracted - ESY Bus Aide - 7 Days June 16, 17, 24 July 8, 15, 22, 29

Immediate Supervisor: Principal (Administrative Assistant Transportation in the case of transportation Aide)

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Salary: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Kanawha County Salary Scale, Pay Grade B commensurate with experience and education level.

Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and KCS's Guide to Performance Evaluation for Service Personnel.

Job Summary: The School Bus Monitor Aide assists with the supervision of student bus passengers, including securing student passengers in the provided types of restraint.

General Performance Requirements and Responsibilities

  • Assists with safety equipment (i.e. wheelchair hook-ups, safety vest, lifts, car seats, etc.)
  • Assists drivers to make sure wheelchairs are properly secured and restraints are properly used.
  • Secures a wheelchair.
  • Opens all emergency exits.
  • Assists and supervises students with disabilities.
  • Communicates with students, parents, school officials and supervisors.
  • Collects and disseminates data (student locations, helping establish pseudo addresses, school data, boundaries, etc.).
  • Effectively addresses unforeseen crises associated with working with large groups of children.
  • Assists with supervision of student passengers on buses and maintains a safe traveling environment.
  • Attends in-services and workshops as directed.
  • Participation in and implementation of specialized training, including CPR, First Aid, Passive Restraint, Behavior management, etc.
  • Administration of medication to Special Education and Regular Education Students in accordance with West Virginia Code §18-5-22.
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment.
  • All other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5;
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c;
  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b.
  • Demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required.

Aides should be able to perform the same duties as the operator in the event of an emergency. Aides shall be given a timed modified physical performance exam prior to beginning their duties: Move from the front of the bus to the rear and exit through the rear door. Ascend and descend the bus steps. Lower and lift objects. Identify, apply, and release the bus parking brake.
