About the role

We are looking for a friendly, caring and reliable Pharmacy Healthcare Assistant to join our team at our Wrythe Lane pharmacy in Carshalton. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys helping people, has a positive attitude and wants to develop their skills and build a career in community pharmacy. Previous pharmacy or retail experience would be an advantage, but it is not essential, as we are happy to train the right candidate. You will play an important role in delivering excellent customer service, supporting patients with their healthcare needs and helping the pharmacy run smoothly. Working as part of a busy, supportive team, you will assist with over-the-counter medicines, prescription collection, stock management and general pharmacy operations. You will also receive training to help you develop your knowledge and skills, including completing the Healthcare Assistant course as part of your role.

Key responsibilities

  • Customer service: Provide a friendly, professional and caring service, helping customers with purchases, prescription collections and general enquiries.
  • Over-the-counter medicines: Assist customers with their healthcare needs, following the pharmacy’s sale of medicines protocol and using the 2WHAM questioning technique.
  • Healthcare advice: Support patients with advice on the appropriate use of medicines and general health and lifestyle matters, within your training and level of competence.
  • Prescription processing: Receive, prepare and hand out prescriptions under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist, ensuring patients receive the correct service.
  • Prescription charges: Collect prescription charges where applicable and ensure patient exemption declarations are completed and signed correctly.
  • Till operation and cash handling: Process sales, follow till procedures, cash up, run reports and complete weekly cash sheets accurately.
  • Stock management: Order appropriate stock to meet customer demand while minimising waste and losses from expired medicines and products.
  • Merchandising and displays: Maintain clean, tidy and attractive retail displays, keep shelves well presented and implement price changes and promotions.
  • Pharmacy administration: Process invoices and paperwork promptly and accurately in line with company procedures.
  • Housekeeping: Help maintain a clean, organised and professional pharmacy environment, including the shop floor and back shop.
  • Healthcare services: Support the delivery of additional pharmacy services, such as stop smoking advice and blood pressure testing, following appropriate training.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • A friendly, caring and professional approach to patients and customers.
  • Good attention to detail, particularly when handling prescriptions, medicines and cash.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a busy, fast-paced pharmacy.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and manage a varied workload.
  • A reliable, responsible attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Previous pharmacy, healthcare or retail experience would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys helping people and is keen to learn. Full support and training will be provided to help the successful candidate develop in the role, including completion of the Healthcare Assistant course. This is an opportunity to develop valuable healthcare and customer service skills while making a real difference to patients in your local community. You will gain practical experience across community pharmacy operations, learn about medicines and healthcare services, and work alongside an experienced pharmacy team. If you are enthusiastic, hardworking and passionate about providing excellent patient care, we would love to hear from you.
