About the role:
justteachers are seeking a committed full-time SEMH Support Assistant to join a specialist education setting in Peterborough that supports pupils with SEMH needs, alongside associated learning difficulties such as autism. This full-time role with a September start involves working within a structured and supportive environment where there is a strong emphasis on behaviour support, routine, and therapeutic approaches to learning. The setting provides tailored education to pupils who benefit from smaller class sizes, consistent support, and a focus on emotional regulation and personal development. You will play a key role in helping pupils engage with education, manage behaviour positively, and build the skills they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
- Support the implementation of behaviour management strategies and individual plans
- Assist pupils in developing emotional regulation and coping strategies
- Work closely with teaching staff to deliver structured and engaging learning activities
- Build strong, trusting relationships to support pupil engagement and wellbeing
- Support pupils during challenging situations, maintaining a calm and consistent approach
- Encourage the development of social skills, independence, and resilience
- Monitor and report on pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
Pre-requisites:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build positive, professional relationships with pupils
- Confidence in managing and de‑escalating challenging behaviour
- A proactive and adaptable attitude
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
