About the Role:

justteachers are working in partnership with a supportive and nurturing specialist provision in Norwich who are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Therapeutic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis from September.

This rewarding opportunity is ideal for an individual who is passionate about supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who require additional emotional, behavioural, and therapeutic support, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes both academically and personally.

This role would suit an experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant, support worker, youth worker, or someone with a strong interest in therapeutic and relationship-based approaches to education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide therapeutic and pastoral support to pupils with SEMH needs both within and outside the classroom
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils to support their emotional wellbeing and engagement in learning
  • Work closely with teaching staff and pastoral teams to implement individual support strategies and interventions
  • Support pupils in developing emotional regulation, resilience, social skills, and self-confidence
  • Assist with the delivery of tailored learning activities and interventions designed to meet individual needs
  • Promote positive behaviour through restorative and trauma-informed approaches
  • Support pupils who may present with challenging behaviours in a calm, consistent, and supportive manner
  • Encourage pupil independence and help develop strategies for managing emotions and behaviour effectively
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, wellbeing, and behavioural development
  • Assist in creating a safe, nurturing, and structured learning environment
  • Support pupils during unstructured times, including break and lunchtime periods where required
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents, carers, and external agencies to support pupil development
  • Contribute to the implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) where applicable
  • Participate in training, meetings, and professional development opportunities
  • Promote safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times
  • Uphold the setting’s values and commitment to supporting vulnerable learners

Pre-requisites:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, behavioural needs, or additional learning needs
  • Experience within education, youth work, residential care, mental health support, or similar settings is desirable
  • A good understanding of trauma-informed practice and therapeutic approaches is advantageous
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and young people
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to adapt to changing situations
  • An empathetic, proactive, and reflective approach to supporting pupils
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Two recent education or child-based references
