About the role:
justteachers are working in partnership with a specialist SEMH school in Norwich who are seeking a dedicated and resilient Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to join their team on a full-time basis from September.
This rewarding opportunity is ideal for an individual who is passionate about supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who require additional emotional, behavioural, and academic support, helping them to engage positively with learning and reach their full potential within a nurturing and structured environment.
The school is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and therapeutic learning environment where every pupil is supported to overcome barriers to learning and achieve success. This role would suit an experienced Learning Support Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Assistant, or someone with relevant experience working with children or young people with additional needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored classroom support to pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
- Build positive, trusting relationships that encourage engagement, confidence, and emotional wellbeing
- Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and the SENCO to implement individual learning and behaviour support plans
- Support pupils in accessing learning activities through one-to-one and small group interventions
- Promote positive behaviour using consistent strategies, de-escalation techniques, and restorative approaches
- Encourage the development of social, emotional, communication, and independence skills
- Support pupils during lessons, transitions, breaktimes, and other unstructured parts of the school day
- Adapt learning activities and resources to meet individual pupil needs
- Monitor pupil progress and provide regular feedback to teaching staff
- Help maintain a safe, calm, and inclusive learning environment
- Promote safeguarding and pupil welfare at all times
- Uphold the school's values and commitment to supporting every learner to achieve their full potential
Pre-requisites:
- Previous experience working with children or young people within an educational, care, youth work, or support setting
- Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, behavioural needs, Autism, ADHD, or other additional needs is highly desirable
- A Teaching Assistant or Learning Support qualification is advantageous but not essential
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent behaviour management skills and the ability to remain calm in challenging situations
- A patient, empathetic, and resilient approach
- The ability to build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents/carers
- Good organisational skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
- A flexible, proactive, and positive attitude towards supporting children with additional needs
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
- Two recent education-based references
