About the role:
A forward-thinking, trauma-informed school near Newark-on-Trent is looking to appoint a dedicated Support Learning Assistant to work within their Regulation Zone provision on a full-time, permanent basis starting in September.
This specialist setting supports Key Stage 3 pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, offering a safe, structured space where students can regulate their emotions, rebuild confidence, and re-engage with learning. The school places a strong emphasis on wellbeing, trust, and positive relationships, ensuring every pupil feels supported and understood.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide targeted support within the Regulation Zone, helping pupils to manage emotions and return to learning in a calm and supported way.
- Build trusting, consistent relationships with students, using a trauma-informed approach to understand and respond to behaviour.
- Support pupils with SEMH needs through de-escalation strategies, emotional coaching, and guided reflection.
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff and pastoral teams to implement individual support plans and behaviour strategies.
- Encourage positive engagement with learning by offering reassurance, structure, and clear expectations.
- Create a safe, nurturing environment where pupils feel secure and ready to re-engage with lessons.
Pre-requisites:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, mental health needs, or behavioural challenges in schools, alternative provisions, or care settings.
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and how this underpins behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Confidence using de-escalation techniques and maintaining a calm, consistent presence in challenging situations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with vulnerable pupils.
- Relevant qualifications such as Teaching Assistant, Youth Work, Psychology, or Health & Social Care, or equivalent experience, are desirable.
