About the role:

justteachers are working in partnership with a specialist school in Great Yarmouth who are seeking a dedicated and resilient Therapeutic SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time, long-term basis from September.

This rewarding opportunity is ideal for an individual who is passionate about supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will play a vital role in helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, build positive relationships, and develop the skills and confidence needed to achieve their full potential.

The school provides a nurturing and therapeutic environment for pupils who require additional support to engage with education. Staff work collaboratively to promote emotional wellbeing, positive behaviour, and personal development, ensuring every pupil feels safe, valued, and supported.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide therapeutic and educational support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Build positive, trusting, and consistent relationships with pupils.
  • Support pupils in managing their emotions, behaviour, and social interactions.
  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to deliver personalised learning and support strategies.
  • Assist pupils in accessing learning activities both within and outside of the classroom.
  • Promote emotional regulation, resilience, self-esteem, and positive coping strategies.
  • Support the implementation of individual behaviour support plans and therapeutic interventions.
  • Help create a calm, structured, and nurturing learning environment.
  • Encourage positive behaviour and celebrate pupil achievements and progress.
  • Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes, enrichment activities, and educational visits.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing where required.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, support staff, parents, carers, and external agencies.
  • Respond appropriately to challenging behaviour using agreed strategies and de-escalation techniques.
  • Promote safeguarding, wellbeing, and pupil welfare at all times.
  • Uphold the school's values and therapeutic approach to education.

Pre-requisites:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, behavioural needs, or additional support requirements.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
  • The ability to remain resilient and professional in challenging situations.
  • An understanding of trauma-informed practice and therapeutic approaches to behaviour is desirable.
  • Strong teamwork and organisational skills.
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable children and young people.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Two recent education-based references.
