About the role:
A specialist education setting in Spalding is looking for a compassionate and proactive Sensory Support Worker to support children and young people with sensory processing needs and additional learning difficulties. The school provides a calm, structured, and nurturing environment where sensory regulation is central to supporting learning, emotional wellbeing, and positive behaviour. This role is available full-time or part-time, with an ASAP start.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide targeted sensory support to pupils who experience sensory processing difficulties, helping them to feel calm, regulated, and ready to learn.
- Support pupils one-to-one and in small groups, implementing personalised sensory strategies such as movement breaks, tactile activities, and calming techniques.
- Work closely with teachers and therapists to follow sensory profiles and plans, adapting support as pupils’ needs change.
- Prepare and use sensory resources and environments, including sensory rooms, quiet spaces, and classroom adaptations.
- Monitor pupils’ responses to sensory input and adjust approaches to reduce dysregulation and support engagement in learning.
- Encourage independence, self-awareness, and communication by helping pupils recognise and manage their sensory needs.
- Build trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe, understood, and supported throughout the school day.
Pre-requisites:
- Experience working with children or young people with sensory processing needs, SEND, ASD, or additional needs in schools, care, early years, or therapeutic settings.
- An understanding of sensory regulation and how sensory needs can impact behaviour, communication, and learning.
- Confidence in using sensory strategies such as calming techniques, movement-based activities, and environmental adaptations.
- A patient, empathetic, and observant approach, with the ability to remain calm during periods of sensory overload or dysregulation.
- Relevant training or qualifications such as Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Health and Social Care, SEN support, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
