About the role
A specialist Primary and Secondary SEND school in Peterborough is seeking a compassionate and committed Support Worker to join their team on a full-time basis from September.
The school supports pupils with a range of additional needs, with all students following an EYFS-based curriculum pathway tailored to their individual developmental, communication, and learning needs.
This rewarding role involves supporting pupils throughout the school day, helping them access learning, develop key life skills, and achieve greater independence.
The successful candidate will be comfortable supporting students with personal care needs and will work closely with teaching staff to provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment.
This role has the potential to extend into a permanent position.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils across both primary and secondary age ranges.
- Assist with the delivery of personalised EYFS-based learning activities designed to meet each pupil’s developmental needs.
- Support pupils with communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and engagement in learning.
- Use visual aids, structured routines, sensory strategies, and practical activities to encourage participation and progress.
- Provide personal care support, including toileting, changing, feeding, and hygiene routines where required, always maintaining dignity and respect.
- Encourage independence and the development of life skills both inside and outside the classroom.
- Promote positive behaviour through patience, consistency, and a nurturing approach.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure pupils receive the highest standard of care and education.
- Support pupils during transitions, break times, and enrichment activities throughout the school day.
Pre-requisites
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEND, learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, or additional needs within education, care, residential, or community settings.
- Comfortable and willing to provide personal care as part of the role.
- Understanding of child development and the importance of adapting support to meet individual needs.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, and families.
- A patient, resilient, and nurturing approach to supporting young people.
- Relevant qualifications such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Health & Social Care, Youth Work, or equivalent experience are desirable but not essential.
