We are currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a supportive secondary school in Leeds from September 2026. This is a rewarding opportunity for an individual who is passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and helping them achieve their full potential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH needs
  • Assist in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and effective manner
  • Support the delivery of tailored learning activities set by the teacher
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to promote engagement
  • Help implement individual support plans and behaviour strategies
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams
  • Monitor and record student progress and behaviour
  • Support students’ emotional wellbeing and personal development
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

Pre-requisites

  • Previous experience working with SEMH, SEN, or challenging behaviour (school-based or similar setting)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach
  • Ability to build rapport with secondary-aged students
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • A proactive and adaptable attitude
  • Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, equivalent, or degree) are desirable but not essential
