About the role
A supportive SEMH school in Peterborough is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to provide targeted support for children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. The school offers a nurturing, structured environment that prioritises emotional wellbeing, positive relationships, and re‑engagement with learning. Pupils are supported to build resilience, confidence, and independence through consistent routines, trauma‑informed approaches, and personalised support. This role is available full-time with an immediate start, and the view to continue into the new academic year.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with teachers to support the delivery of adapted lessons, breaking down learning into manageable steps to meet individual SEMH needs.
- Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support to help pupils access the curriculum and remain emotionally regulated during lessons.
- Use consistent, structured strategies such as clear boundaries, visual supports, check‑ins, and practical activities to encourage engagement and reduce anxiety.
- Support pupils to develop emotional regulation, coping strategies, and positive behaviour for learning.
- Respond calmly to challenging behaviour, using de‑escalation techniques and helping pupils re‑engage with learning following periods of dysregulation.
- Build positive, trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe, valued, and understood within the school environment.
Pre‑requisites
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behaviour needs, or additional needs in schools, alternative provisions, care settings, youth work, or similar environments.
- A good understanding of social, emotional and mental health needs and the impact these can have on learning and behaviour.
- Confidence in using nurturing, firm but fair approaches to support behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and resilient in challenging situations.
- Relevant qualifications or training such as Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Youth Work, Psychology, or equivalent practical experience.
