Justteachers is seeking a compassionate and fluent British Sign Language (BSL) Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated 1:1 support for a deaf student in a specialist SEN school in Coventry. This rewarding role is ideal for someone with a BSL Level 2 qualification or higher who is passionate about making education accessible and meaningful for learners with hearing impairments and complex needs. This role is to start in September 2026 until June 2027. You’ll be working as part of a highly supportive team in a nurturing environment that values inclusion, communication, and personal development. The school supports pupils with a range of needs including deafness, autism, communication difficulties, and complex learning profiles.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 support using fluent BSL to ensure full access to learning and communication throughout the school day.
- Collaborate with teachers and therapists to adapt lessons and resources in line with the student’s EHCP.
- Help develop the student’s confidence, independence, and engagement through personalised support and positive interaction.
- Support emotional well-being, behaviour, and communication using a calm, respectful, and inclusive approach.
- Work closely with the wider staff team and family to ensure continuity and consistency of support.
Pre-requisites
- BSL Level 2 (essential); higher levels or fluency highly desirable.
- Experience working with deaf children or in a special educational needs setting.
- A warm, flexible, and patient manner with a commitment to inclusive education.
- Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Two relevant references, ideally from an educational or care background.
