That’s good, because at Just Eat Takeaway.com (JET) we have abundant opportunity, or, as we say, everything is on the table. We are a leading global online food delivery marketplace. Our tech ecosystem connects millions of active customers with hundreds of thousands of connected partners in countries across the globe.

Our mission? To empower every food moment around the world, whether it’s through customer service, coding or couriers.

About this role

We\’re looking for an experienced Data & Backend Engineer to join the Insights and Enablement team. This newly established team sits within Retail Media, part of Jet Ventures, and plays a pivotal role in shaping how we use data from our Customer Data Platform (CDP), enabling advanced audience segmentation, data visualisation, dashboards and surfacing insights across Retail Media and the broader JET organisation.

This is not a typical Data/Backend Engineer, you’ll work at the intersection of software engineering, data engineering and applied AI/ML – designing, deploying, and scaling production systems that bring advanced data science research to production. You’ll partner closely with data scientists, product managers, analysts and engineers to transform prototypes into reliable, high performing services that deliver impact for advertisers and customers at scale.

We’re seeking self-starters, who are passionate about data, experimentation and emerging technologies in machine learning and AI, and as a senior member of the team, you’ll do more than code—you’ll help shape best practices, mentor others, and raise the technical bar.

Location: Hybrid- 3 days a week from our London office & 2 days working from home

Reporting to: Technology Manager

These are some of the key ingredients to the role

Design and build scalable data pipelines and event streaming architectures with a focus on quality and reliability..

Develop and optimise backend services, APIs, and databases to power segmentation, recommendation, targeting, and measurement.

Applying solid data engineering principles—schema design, efficient storage and retrieval, streaming, and ETL/ELT, with a focus on Top down/bottom up data modelling methodologies.

Orchestrate complex data workflows using modern tools like Airflow and dbt.

Champion best practices for DevOps, DataOps, including testing, CI/CD, orchestration, and monitoring.

Keeping systems observable and healthy, monitoring for data drift, model degradation, and service reliability.

Mentoring engineers, sharing knowledge, and helping the team grow stronger together.

What will you bring to the table?

Experience as a Data Engineer and/or Backend Engineer, with a track record of building and shipping large-scale, real-world data systems.

Strong Python coding skills and a deep understanding of distributed systems and backend services.

Develop and optimise backend services, APIs, and databases to power segmentation, recommendation, targeting, and measurement.

Strong knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL databases like PostgreSQL, BigQuery, Cassandra, or DynamoDB.

Experience with large-scale data platforms (e.g., Spark, Kafka, Flink, BigQuery) and cloud environments, with a preference for AWS or GCP.

Expertise in data engineering: pipelines, modeling, batch vs. event streaming, and ETL/ELT.

Demonstrated experience with modern data orchestration and transformation tools, including Airflow and dbt.

Proven knowledge of data warehouse design and data lake architecture, with specific expertise in data modeling methodologies like Kimball or Inmon.
