If you have spent time in a laboratory running analytical instrumentation and have started to wonder whether that technical knowledge could take you somewhere beyond the bench, this is a route worth looking at properly. We are recruiting on behalf of an established supplier of laboratory instrumentation with a broad portfolio sold into research, testing and industrial laboratories. They are looking for someone to take ownership of this territory, and they are open to the person who knows the science first and learns the commercial side second.
The territory: Greater London, the South East and East Anglia, reaching north to Leicester, Northampton and Peterborough, and east to Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester. Also covering Cambridge, Brighton, Guildford, Reading, Milton Keynes, Luton, St Albans, Canterbury and the surrounding areas.
What the role involves:
- Two or three days a week in front of customers, developing new accounts and looking after existing ones
- Running instrument demonstrations and delivering technical training to scientists and laboratory managers
- Preparing quotations, tenders and the follow up that goes with them
- Presenting on technical merit and representing the manufacturers accurately
- Negotiating commercial terms with support from your manager
- Administration, research and quote preparation from a home office
Who this suits:
- A degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related analytical science
- Hands on laboratory experience in an analytical, environmental, food or contract testing environment, ideally involving sample preparation and trace elemental or gas analysis. Familiarity with techniques such as acid digestion, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AAS or GC is directly relevant
- The confidence to stand in front of a room of scientists and explain what a system does, and where it does not fit
- Someone who researches properly, prepares thoroughly and would rather be trusted long term than close something quickly
- A clean driving licence and the willingness to be on the road across the territory
- Commercial experience is welcome but is not what will get you the job. If you have the science and the appetite to apply it commercially, training will be provided.
What is on offer:
- Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission paid monthly, with the rate increasing once target is reached
- Company car, hybrid or electric where available
- Phone, private health cover and full business tooling
- Structured product training, mentoring from an experienced team and a genuine path into a technical commercial career
- Two stage process: an initial screening call, then an in person interview with a short technical presentation and a sales exercise. Full briefs provided in advance.
