What you’ll be doing:

  • Liaison with build organisation and provision of engineering support to ensure the as built product reflects design intent.
  • Understand the key requirements and critical dimensions for major structural components.
  • Take the lead on design changes that affect major structural components, whether they originate from emergent issues, process improvement, etc.
  • Support or act as the engineering member of the test and authorisation groups (depending on experience).
  • Develop knowledge of the unique build sequence of the Reactor Compartment Unit of the submarine and provide engineering support.
  • Participate as an engineering representative in the planning and execution of all major construction evolutions with the scope of the Reactor Compartment Unit.
  • Development & presentation of sound technical solutions to issues arising during construction of the Naval Reactor Plant.
  • Providing technical rationale and sound engineering recommendations to Rolls-Royce and MoD to challenge existing requirements.

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Engineering degree level qualification – Mechanical or Structural as a discipline.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, including knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Awareness of weld engineering and Non-Destructive Examination techniques.
  • Technical report writing skills & experience of justifying design change.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of stress, fatigue, and thermal analysis.
  • Nuclear radiation shielding awareness.
  • Previous Nuclear Plant experience.
  • Knowledge of the Nuclear Industry and its regulators.

The Platform Nuclear Engineering Department team:

As a Principal Engineer – Nuclear (Mechanical), you will be supporting the design, build & test activities on the Naval Reactor Plant (NRP) across multiple programmes to ensure the design intent is met in the final product. This includes coordinating and leading the resolution of a diverse set of issues that arise during the build and test of the reactor plant, with a strong emphasis on developing technical solutions to problems, as well as ensuring that the associated safety case is adequate, coupled with providing advice to various internal teams such as Engineering Delivery, Test & Commissioning, Operations and Project. Externally, you will be required to represent the business and operate alongside our Enterprise partners, namely the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Rolls-Royce Marine Power. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarine roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
