Job Title: Senior Special Effects Technician

Location: London

Salary Range: (phone number removed)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze scripts to determine required models and effects, including pyrotechnics, and collaborate with creative teams.
  • Suggest post-production and CGI alternatives when suitable.
  • Provide cost estimates and work within budgets.
  • Attend pre-production meetings, focusing on safety and technical requirements.
  • Assist in assembling and managing a team of Technicians.
  • Oversee the construction and execution of models and effects.
  • Coordinate safety protocols with relevant departments.
  • Liaise with department heads to ensure necessary props and costumes are available.
  • Ensure on-set coverage by a qualified deputy when needed.
  • Work with directors and other creatives to safely set up and execute effects shots.
  • Comply with HSE and COSHH regulations.
  • Train and mentor team members.
  • Maintain accurate work records and approve team outputs.

Pyrotechnics-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Follow regulations for handling, storage, and transport of pyrotechnics.
  • Stay familiar with pyrotechnic materials and equipment.
  • Strictly adhere to safety standards for pyrotechnic and fire effects.
  • Lead pyrotechnic operations in the absence of a Senior Designer.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Proven experience as a senior technician in special effects.
  • Strong knowledge of materials, equipment, and SFX techniques.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols, post-production, and camera processes.
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable:

  • Design-related qualification.
  • Experience with pyrotechnic and fire effects materials and equipment.
