Temporary Refuse Collector – Derby City First Induction TBC the 9th or 10th of September Employer: JT Recruit Location: Derby Pay Rate: £12.65 per hour Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 06:00 – 15:45 (30-minute lunch break) JT Recruit are recruiting Temporary Refuse Collectors to support a local authority in delivering a high-quality refuse and recycling service for local residents and businesses. About the Role Work as part of a crew to ensure the safe and efficient collection of refuse, recycling, and garden waste across the city. Main Duties: * Collect and load refuse, recycling, and garden waste into collection vehicles * Operate and handle bins, bags, and bulky waste safely * Assist the driver with vehicle maneuvers in tight or busy areas * Follow collection schedules and safety regulations * Report issues such as missed collections, contamination, damaged bins, or hazards * Adhere to health & safety guidelines, including correct PPE and safe lifting * Provide polite, professional customer service when required * Assist with cleaning vehicles and equipment as needed Training & Induction: * Compulsory 2-day on-site training (date TBC) * Then 3 days assigned to a team as extra crew for final induction sign-off * Annual refresher training required What to Consider Before Applying Pros: * Job security – essential public service * Team environment – strong crew culture * Physical exercise – active, outdoor role * Routine hours – fixed shifts, 4-day week * Community value – keep streets clean & support recycling * No long formal qualifications required – full training provided * Opportunities for progression – supervisory paths and upskilling Cons: * Physically demanding – lifting, long walking, all-weather work * Early starts – shifts begin early morning * Exposure to hazards – lifting, sharps, chemicals, traffic * Dirty work – handling waste can be unpleasant * Repetitive work – similar routes and tasks daily * Seasonal challenges – heat in summer; cold/wet in winter * Time pressure & pace – strict route schedules and productivity targets can make shifts fast-paced Ideal Candidate A strong team player with good timekeeping, reliability, and a solid work ethic.
