Role Overview
The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the design, development, and delivery of advanced mechanical systems for backup power, hybrid generation, and energy storage solutions. You will collaborate with sales teams, electrical engineers, production supervisors, and commissioning teams to ensure systems meet customer needs, performance, safety, and compliance standards. This role is technical, hands-on, and customer-facing. You will influence product evolution, engineering best practices, and the wider technical strategy as the company scales.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design and engineering for generator sets, hybrid systems, and packaged power solutions
- Perform detailed airflow and cooling calculations, including heat rejection, pressure losses, ventilation sizing, and fan selection
- Carry out noise attenuation calculations, including acoustic treatment design and silencer specification
- Design mechanical layouts, exhaust systems, fuel systems, ducting, supports, and mounting arrangements
- Develop containerised generator solutions, including cooling airflow strategies, structural requirements, and service access provisions
- Prepare detailed mechanical drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documentation
- Oversee product compliance with relevant standards
- Support factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, and commissioning activities
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex airflow, cooling, or noise issues on customer sites
- Guide junior engineers and contribute to internal technical training
- Collaborate with sales and project teams to develop technical proposals and solution architectures
- Participate in the continuous improvement of engineering processes, documentation, and product quality
Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- 7+ yearsβ experience in power generation or similar industrial sectors
- Strong understanding of engine cooling systems, heat rejection, ventilation, and high-ambient derating
- Experience with mechanical packaging, enclosure/container/canopy design, and safety & serviceability considerations
- Knowledge of exhaust systems, backpressure management, and emissions compliance fundamentals
- Ability to produce high quality engineering drawings and documentation
- Competent in using 2D CAD and 3D design software (Creo)
- Proven track record managing engineering deliverables in fast-paced projects
- Excellent communication skills, including technical explanation to non-engineers
- Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership
- Experience with CFD for airflow and thermal modelling
- Familiarity with CHP packages
- Familiarity with backup systems for critical industries such as data centres, utilities, manufacturing, or emergency services
- Knowledge of emissions compliance and modern engine technologies
