Role Purpose
Data Management (DM) provides the framework that ensures data is reliable, well understood, secure, and trusted for operational, management, analytical, and customer-focused use. Data is a core business asset with both strategic and tactical importance and must be effectively governed and leveraged to deliver maximum value. The Senior Data Manager will play a key role in ensuring the governance, quality, and effective use of data across the UK business. This role acts as a bridge between business and technology, ensuring that data structures, standards, and controls align with business needs while supporting innovation and new technologies.
Key Objectives of Data Management
- Understand and help define business information needs
- Ensure the creation, maintenance, and integrity of data assets, including logical data models
- Promote high-quality data and support the business in its use
- Ensure effective storage, usage, and governance of data
- Maintain coherence of the Microsoft data environment and structures with business requirements, including ownership of business definitions and rules within platforms such as Fabric and Purview
Role Overview
The Senior Data Manager will work as part of the UK data team to ensure robust data governance and effective data management practices. The role supports senior leadership, including the COO, in delivering the organisation’s data strategy and governance agenda.
Key focus areas include:
- Curating and maintaining the Data Body of Knowledge (BoK) and data glossary
- Ownership of metadata, master and reference data, and logical data models
- Acting as Data Design Authority and a key interface between business and IT
- Driving the Data Quality framework, certification processes, and issue resolution
- Enabling appropriate use of data domains and emerging technologies (e.g. Generative AI)
- Acting as the business point of contact for IT initiatives with a material data impact
Key Responsibilities
Data Design & Governance
- Act as Data Design Authority in defining data strategy and logical data models
- Apply and embed a robust data governance framework, ensuring adherence to certification and quality standards
- Maintain and evolve data domains to align with changing business needs
Data Quality & Integrity
- Drive continuous improvement of data quality through analysis, remediation planning, and root cause resolution
- Implement and own remediation plans covering lineage, mapping, and data issue resolution
- Work closely with IT to drive functional changes arising from data quality insights and reporting
Metadata, Definitions & Stewardship
- Proactively engage business teams in the curation and maintenance of business terms, definitions, formulas, and synonyms
- Own and maintain metadata, master data, and reference data frameworks
Security, Access & Compliance
- Collaborate with IT, Information Security, and control functions to define and implement appropriate data access rules and guardrails
- Ensure compliance with data management and data lake governance standards
- Enable effective and appropriate use of data domains and new technologies
- Act as a market and industry observer to identify new data sources, tools, and techniques that can enhance the organisation’s data estate
Experience & Skills
- Extensive experience working in complex data environments
- Strong knowledge of metadata management, master data, and reference data models
- Experience within the insurance or financial services sector
- Strong background in Data Quality Management, including DQ rule definition, analysis, and interpretation
- Hands-on experience with data quality tools and continuous improvement initiatives
- Experience leading or supporting data stewardship communities
- Strong problem-solving skills, including root cause analysis
