My client is a thriving, independent ecology and sustainability consultancy with offices around the UK including a significant base in Bristol. With a commitment to professional integrity, innovation, and sustainability, they provide expert ecological advice across a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from infrastructure and renewable energy schemes to bespoke conservation and biodiversity initiatives. As they continue to grow, they are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Associate Director – Ecology to lead complex projects, support team development, and help shape the future of the business.
The Role: This is a senior leadership role suited to an experienced ecological consultant who combines strong technical expertise with project management, team leadership, and business development skills. As Associate Director, you will oversee high-profile ecological projects, mentor junior staff, engage with key clients, and contribute to the strategic direction of the consultancy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a diverse range of ecological projects from concept to delivery, ensuring high standards of technical quality, client service, and compliance.
- Provide technical oversight and quality assurance on ecological surveys, assessments (including EcIA and HRA), and mitigation strategies.
- Line-manage, mentor, and support the development of consultants across the ecology team.
- Maintain and build client relationships, identifying new opportunities and contributing to business development and tender submissions.
- Collaborate with other senior leaders to inform company strategy, improve processes, and champion sustainability across our work.
- Represent the company at industry events and in professional networks to raise profile and share best practices.
Essential Requirements:
- A relevant degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline.
- At least 8 years’ experience in ecological consultancy or a related field, including team or project leadership responsibilities.
- Strong working knowledge of UK and EU environmental legislation and policy.
- Proven experience of managing complex, multidisciplinary projects and producing high-quality reports and technical documentation.
- Excellent client-facing skills, commercial awareness, and ability to win and manage work.
- Protected species licence(s) and full membership of CIEEM (or eligibility).
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
Desirable:
- Chartered Ecologist or working toward Chartered status.
- Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain, nature-based solutions, or habitat banking.
- Understanding of wider sustainability, climate resilience, or environmental planning issues.
